My computer (Acer ASX3200) has just had Vista re-loaded after a system crash. All program files have had to be re-loaded including Acrobat Reader X. When I try to open up a file, Reader fails with the following message:
"C:\Prograqm files\Adobe\Reader10.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way"
The same result and message appears when I try to open an attachment on an e-mail. Any suggestions?

Hi Barbara
It seems that we have been the cause of our own problem!
Adobe ReaderX is NOT compatible with Vista!!!
I believe that Adobe are bringing out a version which is compatible for Flash Player, but don't yet know if this applies to Reader and Acrobat. I have downloaded the previouas versions of these and got my computer to refuse up-dates. I can't remember how I did this (it was following instructions given me by a young PC wizard, but will try to find them and let you know. Else you will have to find a friendly PC support shop and see if they have the solution. I'll try and find that info now.
Regards
Peter

I have VISTA and was just now able to open a document in REader X. However, I only installed it after having problems with Adobe 9 reader, which I uninstalled. But I am having the same problem with X. That is, whenever I am on a website and want to open a PDF document my on-line service crashes. Not my computer, I just get kicked off-line. Every time! I don't know what to do about it.

I was prompted to update my adobe reader(9) and when the update(X) was complete and I tried to restart, the computer, now it crashes each time I try to restart. It will not boot completely. It cycles through the startup over and over. OS - XP home. Now I find that Adobe doesn't offer any customer support except for a $40 fee. Nice. Does anyone have a recommendation?

Mark,

Boot into Safe Mode (I believe it's F4 during the boot process). Log into the machine and uninstall Reader to see if that resolves your boot issue.

I sincerely doubt that Reader is the culprit of XP's boot issues. That being said, I've been wrong before...

OS = Windows 7 Professional.
I upgraded to Adobe Reader X several weeks ago, but it often produces runtime error messages with the usual: "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way." It doesn't always do this, but once it does, it closes. I can usually reopen and try again, but that's pointless because until I restart my PC it continues to produce the runtime error. Occasionally it freezes completely and I have to reboot.

I might uninstall and try v9 again, but I think I also had problems with that after installing Win7. Perhaps Adobe Reader isn't entirely compatible with Win7 yet.

PS. I've deselected 'Enable protected mode at startup' and haven't had a problem since doing that. Does that leave the program exposed to security issues?

Does anyone from the Acrobat team ever read these comments? It seems to me that we are talking into thin air!
If a team member does read this, PLEASE let us all know if you are doing anything about his problem.

astrasew, I'm going to wait a week or so and if ARX keeps working for me, my only issue will be that there could be a security risk while 'protected mode' is disabled.

I'm reluctant to complain about free software, particularly when there are other PDF options available, e.g. Soda, which gets excellent reports. I'm prepared to pay for a product that works as it's supposed to (as long as it's not too expensive). Of course, you can create PDFs with Soda, not just read them.

Completely untrue. The system requirements for Adobe Reader X are clearly stated on the product page:

Microsoft® Windows® XP Home, Professional, or Tablet PC Edition with Service Pack 3 (32 bit) or Service Pack 2 (64 bit); Windows Server® 2003 (with Service Pack 2 for 64 bit; Windows Server® 2008 (32 bit and 64 bit); Windows Server 2008 R2 (32 bit and 64 bit); Windows Vista® Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise with Service Pack 2 (32 bit and 64 bit); Microsoft Windows 7 Starter, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise (32 bit and 64 bit).

If you're running Vista, you need Service Pack 2. That's all.

This is a User Community forum, not a direct line to product support. You are talking to other users. Staff do visit on occasion but are not here to reply to every message, nor would it be appropriate to do so.

If you wish to raise a support case for any product you should do so via the Adobe.com website. There is a fee per ticket, but if a case results in a bug being identified that fee is waived.

I am running Vista Ultimate. Reader X will not start when I double click it or a pdf file on my maching. If I right click the icon and select open as administrator, Adobe reader x runs fine, eventhough my user name has the same permissions as the "administrator".

I still get confused by the 'administrator' function, but I understand it gives you an extra layer of security, particularly if you have a password on it. Some programs appear to require that extra layer of 'administrator' security. Once you have the program open, try deselecting 'Enable protected mode at startup' and you might then be able to double-click on icons and open without administrator approval.

Are you running version 10 or 10.1.0? I think the issue might have been resolved in version 10.1.0. I started with 10 and had the problems you're describing, but now I have 10.1 and notice the security settings have 'Enable enhanced security' selected as default and I'm not having problems any longer.
