Attached files -- can reviewers edit?

My apologies if this has been covered somewhere else, but I have been unable to find an answer to this question.

If I send a PDF with attached Word files for review, will the reviewers be able to edit the Word file? I am using Acrobat Pro v9, but reviewers may not have the same version (possibly Reader only, from version 7 to 8). Also, both the PDF and Word files will reside on a shared network folder (will not be traveling via e-mail) to enable accessibility, etc. I did a quick test with one reviewer, and the Word file was read-only (I did not select any security settings).

The users probably will not be able to attach their own Word docs (not their forte), so it would be great if they could have access to already attached files.

to the question, will the reviewers be able to edit the Word file? the answer is YES.

Thanks for the response. In a quick test, one of the reviewers tried to save a change in Word, but Word indicated that the file was read-only. Is there a setting in Acrobat that may have protected the attachment? The Word file is on a shared network drive and was protected.

a reviewer with Reader can save the Word (or any other file) to his own PC via the "save as" command and by giving the file a modified file name. a reviewer with Acrobat can save the modified file as an attachment to the PDF.

to be clear, the reviewer who uses Reader can save an editable file to his own PC, as described above, and can edit the file with it's native application; but can not attach the edited file to a PDF file using the Reader app. Generally, you can remove a file's read-only attribute by simply displaying the file's properties and removing the check at "read-only".
