Backwards compatibility of Acrobat Forms and PDF Packages

We are currently using Adobe Acrobat Professional (9) to create and deploy both simple electronic forms and also PDF packages for upload to our servers. Our end-users are currently using Acrobat Reader 9 to access these files. We will soon be forced to adopt an externally provided system which will only provide Adobe Acrobat 7.

My initial questions are: What effect will the downgrade of the Acrobat software have in relation to our current processes? - What functionality will we lose in regard to our electronic forms and more importantly are the PDF packages able to be viewed?

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 9.0, Windows

For packages and portfolios, user must upgrade to version 8 or better.

For Forms created with LiveCycle Designer, fully updated version 5 or better. But there are many script actions that have additional version requirements.

Thanks George, will a user attempting to access a PDF package with Reader 7 receive an error message or will it just not be able to open the package?

By default, PDF Portfolios created in Acrobat 9 will open in earlier versions of Acrobat and Reader and the PDF Portfolio will make the best use of the features available to it. When opened in version 8, the PDF Portfolio will act like a PDF Package and in version 7 and 6, the contents will appear as attachments.

PDF Portfolios and Backward CompatibilityIf an Acrobat 8 "Package" is viewed by Adobe Reader 7 (presumed to be fully updated) the the PDF displayed has attachments that the end-user will have to open for viewing. Similarly for an Acrobat 9 "Portfolio".

None of the unique features provided by either will be available via Adobe Reader 7.

Be well...
