Bates numbering against a "protected" file

In Acrobat 8 Pro, I am attempting to insert Bates numbers using Advanced > Document Processing > Bates Numbering > Add.

The message returned on all my files is that this function cannot be performed on this file because it is "protected".

I have attempted to remove whatever protection may exist on the files.
The files were never password protected.
The files all originated as scanned paper documents.
I ran a batch sequence and removed all security and tried the Bates feature again, but no success, same message, i.e., can't Bates number because 'protected'.

I am not even clear on what 'protected' means at this point (because I removed all security on the files and never took steps to affirmatively protect documents) and have less of a clue as to how to remove the mysterious 'protection'.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi --

An interesting problem, Harry. I suggest you check out the document's contents. Choose Document > Examine Document to see what is lurking in the file and remove it. There may be content from other programs, hidden data, and so on that are preventing your file from behaving.donna.

What application was used to create the PDF in question?

LiveCycle Designer's technology effectivly prevents most of Acrobat's PDF modification actions.

Thank you.

Problem is solved.

My error was in intending to insert Bates numbers into an open file using the Browse > Select file command rather than clicking on 'include all open pdf files'.Apparently any file that is open cannot be Bates stamped except by identifying the file as 'open' through use of the 'include all open pdf files' checkbox.

Attempting to Bates stamp an open file by the Browse button will result in the message that the file is protected.
