Bates Numbering: Reducing the digits from 6 to something lower

It appears that even though Acrobat would like the number of digits for Bates Numbering to be between 6 and 15, it can be changed to something fewer by modifying the Bates Numbering code when you insert it in the Header/Footer field in Acrobat 9 Pro.

For example: If you insert the code with the minimum number - 6- this is the code that appears:

(less than symbol)(less than symbol)Bates Number#6#1(greater than)(great than)

(sorry, the forum won't let me type the 'less than' or 'greater than' symbol)

If you go into the field and simply Backspace or Delete just the 6 and change it to 2 or 3 (or whatever number less than 6), it generates correctly.

So, the modified code would look like this, if I change it to 3 (making sure to not add any spaces).

(less than symbol)(less than symbol)Bates Number#6#1(greater than)(great than)

My question is this:

Does anyone know why, if I can change it, Adobe limited it in the first place?
And, does anyone know that if it is done, are there any ill-effects that can occur that I am not aware of?

Thank you.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 9.3.1, Windows

only Adobe knows and they don't reveal secrets.

Thank you for replying.

Good to know - I just wanted to see if anyone had any bad experiences doing this.

Perfect! :)
