Acrobat is the only application where you attempt to get rid of elements and the file size increases. I had one that started out around 1.5 megs and after I ran examine document and got rid of hidden text and hidden and cropped images it ended up around 12 megs.

Save the file as a Postscript file(.ps), then use Distiller "refry" it. You will lose all of your bookmarks, links, etc, but it will be smaller.

Thanks. I do this very thing quite a bit. Some people frown on "refrying" but I don't. I just think the phenomena of files getting bigger when attempting to remove stuff is rather odd.

run 'reduce file size' on the file

It is odd, and it happens more than I would like. Must be something behind the scenes of how the file is being rewritten as a PDF. A while ago Adobe did a behind the scenes of what makes up a PDF file, but I can't find it on the site anymore.

If you are using the "Optimize PDF", you need to check your conversion settings and make sure they are the same as how you originally set them. Also you might try a 'Save as' action to remove some of the artifacts.

Sometimes you can do "all of the above" and the file size will still grow. In those cases only "refrying" the PDF works. Why?
