A Broken PDF

Is there anyway to repair a PDF?
This PDF is a scanned hard copy that I cannot open, error message is "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired."
Anyone have any suggestions aside from restoring. Because so far after restoring from last years copy, the file remained corrupt.
And I am ultimately hoping for a software solution...

Hi,
re: Repair a PDF
Acrobat 8.1.2 (Professional or 3D) has a "Repair damaged document" Fixup.
Note:
Acrobat Preflight Fixup comment wrote:
Tries to repairs a damaged document. Repairing a damaged document will often succeed if there are only minor inconsistencies in its internal file structure, like a cross reference table with incorrect file offsets. Seriously damaged PDF documents cannot be repaired though.

With this suggested Acrobat Preflight fixup, when you added the note about having minor file problems and seriously damaged pdf's...how can I decipher that considering the only information I have is "This file is damaged and could not be repaired." Is this automatically categorized as seriously damaged?
Should I go about using every option in the Preflight Fix up section?

Hi JBM1982,

You bring up good points. Having come across the particular Preflight fixup I mentioned I remembered your post and decided to pass the information on to you. However, I also noted the caveat associated with it and posted it.

So, what to do?

Taken literally, the fixup can handle simple things only. If the PDF cannot be fixed by it then, in context of the fixup's parameters, the PDF has "serious damage". With that said, more potent tools that a developer or file recovery outfit would have might make the fix rather easy. So "serious" in context of the fixup may not mean "beyond the pale".

I'd run the Preflight fixup against the PDF file in question. The problem might be a simple broke-fix and resolved.
On the other hand, if the fixup cannot help then you now know that it is time to consider obtaining the services of a company that specializes in file recovery or a developer. They'd have the higher end analysis tools to identify more specifically what the problem is and if it can be resolved.
