Catalog Index NOT being used from within web browser

We publish our print product catalog (80 MB) onto a PDF file.

Using Acrobat Professional 7 to author. An Acrobat Catalog Index is generated for fast searches. We then put all PDF and Index files on a CD using HTML-based menu.

The Search works fine if the PDF files are opened directly in Acrobat Reader (independent of the browser). However, since we are using a HTML-based menu, depending on the users' browser preference, the PDF, most of the time, is opened within a web browser. The problem is that if the PDF is opened within a web browser, then it DOES NOT and CANNOT seem use the index. This basically makes the PDF index files useless.

Is there a way around this?

If the HTML-based menu is the culprit, then is there a way to force the Acrobat Reader to be launched independently of the web browser.
We would like to retain the menu interface to make it easier for the CD users to explore the CD content.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The Acrobat Catalog/Index was not designed for web server use. It was designed of desktop, CD-ROM, and networked drives. Adobe provides at no cost the PDF IFilter for use with Microsoft indexing services. It should be noted that with version 7.05, this capability was built into Reader and Acrobat.

Thanks for the reply, gkaiseril.

The thing is there is no web server involved here. Everything is contained within the CD. The HTML menu and its resources are all on the CD. The menu was created to improve the user's ease-of-use.

I understand that the index is not used when Acrobat is launched as a web browser plug-in, so what I'm looking for is a work-around. Retaining the HTML-based menu on the CD, I would like to somehow be able to control the way Acrobat Reader launches when the client clicks on the PDF file through this HTML-based menu.
