Change Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 to create Ver 5 compatible (1.4) files...

... by default?

If anyone's found a solution to this, it will save a really nice lady loads and loads of work. She converts TIF files from Microsoft Outlook 2007 e-mail to PDF all day.

Specifically, the fix I'm looking for is to have Adobe Acrobat Pro 9's context menu (right-click) option to Create Adobe PDF File make a PDF v1.4 file by default.

I've created the profile with these settings, and have it set as the default in the Adobe Distiller application. I've also configured the Adobe PDF Printer print preferences to use the compatible format. Printing to a PDF gives the desired result.

But this isn't changing the context menu option's default format ... files created with the right-click option are still created as Acrobat 7 (ver1.6) format.

Yep, she knows how to use the optimizer to change the format, but a way to make 1.4 the default will save massive time and frustration.

Any ideas?

Something to try.

Open Adobe Distiller.
Click Settings > Edit Adobe PDF Settings
What is now displayed is the configuration setup for the job option that was shown in the previous dialog's "Default Settings".

That's ok. Look through General, Images, Fonts, Color, Advanced, & Standards if curious.
Or, at bottom left, check the 'Show All Settings" and select "Standard" (if not already shown).
In 'General' set desired desired Compatibility (PDF Version).
Do a Save As & give the new job option a unique name (i.e., TIFF2PDF).
Back out of Distiller.

Now, go into the 'Printers' section of Windows.
XP:
(XP) Start > Printers and Faxes >
(Vista) Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > PrintersSelect Adobe PDF
Right Click > select Properties
In the dialog that appears, locate and click on the button [Printing Preferences].
In the Adobe PDF Printing Preferences dialog:
Observe value for 'Default Settings' - use drop-down menu to select "TIFF2PDF'.
Click OK.

Back in the Adobe PDF Properties dialog -
Click on Advanced tab.
Locate and click on the [Printing Defaults] button.
Use the 'Default Settings' drop-down to select 'TIFF2PDF'.
Select OK.

Note that performing one of the two steps above does not change what is "held" in the other step.
So, do both.

The thought is to establish a Distiller job option, having the desired PDF Compatibility setting, as the "default", behind the scene, job options setting.

Then, also consider setting the Adobe Printer as the default printer prior to start the TIFF > PDF work.Be well...

Be well...
