Change Default Setting For Saved Version

Using Acrobat 9, but must save all PDF's as V1.4.
Have created "Setting" in Distiller which I can select in Word and Excel so that PDF's created there come out as V1.4. Perfect.
However, combining from Windows Explorer, bangs it back up to 1.6. How can I get the combined pdf to retain the v1.4 format?

My Product Information:
Acrobat Standard 9.4, Windows

If you do a Save As, do you see the following option Adobe PDF Files, Optimized? If so, you can click the Setting button and set your compatibility there.

No such option - but I don't want to have to choose Save As every time - I want to change the default.

Apparently it's only available in the Pro. version - which makes sense because this is where the PDF Optimizer is. The Combine command uses later features of the PDF format thus the reason it is 1.6. I would just stick with generating your PDFs using the compatibility setting in Distiller.

If you have the Pro. version you could create a Preflight droplet but this isn't an option at this point.
