I am using Acrobat 5.0. When I convert a pdf to rtf for editing I lose the format. I am using word 2003 to edit the documnet. Is there a way to preserve the original pdf format?

Exporting as RTF or copy/pasting are you only options. You really need to look at upgrading Acrobat. Version 5 is going to keep limiting you on what you can do with the program.
