Copy and paste formatting

I have and existing PDF document that I need to break up into chapters and be able to edit. When I copy and paste, I lose all existing formatting; even when copying and choosing "copy with formatting". I have done this previously in Acrobat 8 Pro, but am having no luck with Acrobat 9 Pro. Can anyone offer some tips? I have already "tagged" the document as suggested in Adobe Help, but still no luck. Thanks...

Have you tried Exporting the content instead of copy/paste?
