Crash during save after adding bookmark

I have a sizable PDF that was created by a third party using Adobe Distiller. I have added a number of bookmarks (~30) to the document. However, I am unable to add another bookmark. When I open the document and add a single bookmark, then attempt to save the document, Acrobat crashes during the save. This simple operation has been repeated at least 5 times with the exact behavior each time.

Does anyone have any experience working around this problem? Is there a chance my document has become corrupted? Is there any kind of operation I can perform within Acrobat that might clean up the document from anything wrong with it?

Thank you.

Hello dhiebert,

Are you getting the error (Not Responding) coming up in the top most caption bar of Acrobat, if so, leave it for a while - go get a coffee, because sometimes I've found that the program is still running and will complete the task, it's just having a lend of you. It may not work, but it's worth a try.

This problem has arisen in other programs and can be quite annoying and frustrating.

No, it is a bona fide crash. The Acrobat window vanishes and I get a crash report (I am using a Mac) from the O/S telling me that the program crashed (which means that the O/S killed it for doing some bad).
