Creating Adobe PDF window hangs

I have an older version of Acrobat that came with my scanner. Until recently it was working fine. Now all of a sudden, when I try to print documents to Adobe PDF, the first window starts up, then another window opens saying Creating Adobe PDF. At that point everything just stops and freezes.
 
Makes no difference what application I am running this from, the same result happens.
 
I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the software, but that has not helped.
 
I changed a printer preference to "send directly to printer", but that also has not helped.
 
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
