Creating a Table of Contents for a Combined Document for print use

Hello,

I have stated before that I intend to use Acrobat soley for the purpose of combining multiple documents into one report (in this case, a real estate appraisal). Is there any way to create a table of contents that will come after the title page, where I can write which page each section can be found?

Thanks,
M

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8, Macintosh

The document development occurs in an authoring program document and then converted to PDF. To create your table of contents you need to set it up in a program (Word, InDesign, etc.) then convert to PDF. The converted PDF can be inserted or combined with other files. You can then add links from the contents page to other pages in the PDF file.

If this answer doesn't get to a solution for you, submit another with a little more detail.

Hi -- is there a way to get Acrobat 8 to auto-renumber pages in the header/footer after a page is added or removed?
Thanks!

Back to the Table of Contents, Is there a way for Acrobat to create the Table of Contents the way Word does? We are also using different sources that are not conducive to using Word.

Use any authoring application that supports generation of a table of contents (WordPerfect, FrameMaker, InDesign, etc.).
Or, build the toc manually. Use any text editor. Output the PDF. Lay down links manually.

Or, on a blank PDF, use Acrobat's text tool to manually enter one line at a time. Then laydown the links with the links tool.

Many ways to produce your toc. Some easy, some not so easy.

Just my opinion, but if what you have as an authoring application is lacking it may be time to consider a replacement.

Regardless, if there are other issues involved and you can share them please do so. It's always nice to learn someone's been able to "implement" because of something shared here .Be well...

I understand that toc / indexes must be made within the authoring application (Word in most cases). However, in my case, I have inherited many portions of my multi-document PDF and wish to combine them and make a toc. I thought that I'd copy out my pdf into word, build the toc, and then insert that into the original pdf. However, when I do the copy, the formating of the original pdf is not the same and the pages will not be the same. yes, I can edit them, but that's a pain. Is there a way to export the pdf to a .doc that will not loose the formating???

Kgraham,
Just a thought here, but, you could use "combine" to get a single PDF.
Save it and then save as to a new file name (say "file02.pdf"). If file02.pdf has bookmarks, delete them all.
Review the file and create new bookmarks that reflect your desired table of contents entries.
Use the "List all Bookmarks" batch sequence to obtain a stand alone PDF file that lists the bookmarks.
Save the file (let's call it "toc.pdf" ). Insert toc.pdf into file02.pdf where you want it.
Next lay down links on the "toc" using the link tool. You can utilize the bookmarks you already
put into file02.pdf to go to the desired view/page.

I suspect that this will be less aggrevation than pushing content into MS Word from a mouse nest of PDFs.
Even with a tagged PDF having a well formed document structure there can be a fair amount of work to clean up the MS Word file so that a clean table of contents can be created by MS Word.

Regardless, without the source files available obtaining one for one congruence of layout/format is problematic to say the least.

List all bookmarks
Batch sequence name: List all Bookmarks.sequ.
Task: Create a PDF document using the Report object that lists the bookmarks in another PDF document. The new document can be saved and printed.
