Disabling links in PDF files

I create PDFs from Word files (where I've already disabled the links) but even though there is no blue text or underline, the URLs still serve as active links. Any idea how to disable them completely?

Acrobat Pro 8.0, Windows

Preferences > General > Create links from URLs
(uncheck it)
