Hi,

I'm running Acrobat Pro 7.0 that I use to create a paperless storage for all my personal records. The file is currently approching 12K pages. Anyhow, to navigate it, I use bookmarks extensively. Recently, I downloaded a document that is blank in the bookmark area and will not allow me to create a bookmark. I have encountered this before on documents with some form of security settings, after removing the security I can then add a bookmark. However, I now have a document that does not have security turned on, but will not allow bookmarks to be added.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Jim

It's possible that the PDF has Reader Rights. Save the PDF as a Copy.

Thank you for the replay. When I try to save the file I get the following error "The document could not be saved. there was a problem reading this document (109)." Does this help understand the problem?

Yes it does. The PDF format is corrupted, or possibly it was bad to begin with. See if you can repair or optimize it.

I'm sorry, but I don't know how to repair or optimize a file, can you give me some hints.

Hi,
I don't think AApro7's Preflights provide a "repair".

AA7PRO
While Acrobat 7 Pro Preflights provide Rules & Conditions that can be used to assess if a PDF is damaged
(aka corrupted or malformed PDF output from third party PDF producers that do not met the PDF ISO Stanadard (or the PDF References that preceded the ISO Standard))
Acrobat 7 Pro Preflights provide no "Repair" functionality.
Or, more precisely, I cannot find anything in the Rules or Conditions of AA7pro Preflights that might do this.

What is available in AA7pro Preflights:
These "Rules" (which help identify problems but will not "repair"/"fix")
--| Error in page description
--| Error in structured PDF
--| General File format error
--| Unknown operator in page description
Typically, if a PDF is flagged by any of these the PDF is a candidate for the recycle bin.

--| PDF Optimizer:
Acrobat 7 Pro does include PDF Optimizer. Tools > Print Production > PDF Optimizer.
Prior to playing with it, a slow read of Acrobat 7's Help discussion on PDF Optimizer might be beneficial.

AA8PRO -
--| Preflight Custom checks available for:
Error in page description, Error in structured PDF, General file format error, or No structure errors detected, Unknown operator in page description, Unknown color space family, and Unknown operator.

--| Preflight Fixups
I can find no Preflight Fixup similar to that which is available in AA9pro.

--| PDF Optimizer - available (Advanced > PDF Optimizer)AA9PRO -
--| Preflight Fixup:
A Fixup Preflight for "Repair damaged document" is available.
"Tries to repair a damaged document. Repairing a damaged document will often succeed if there are only minor inconsistencies in its internal fle structure, like a cross reference table with incorrect file offsets.
SERIOUSLY DAMAGED PDF DOCUMENTS CANNNT BE REPAIRE THOUGH. (caps added for emphasis)

--| PDF Optimizer - available (Advanced > PDF Optimizer)Adobe has announced that the end of support life for Adobe Reader / Acrobat release 7.x is December 31, 2010.
If you make some reasonable use of your Acrobat 7 Pro license then you would be well served by obtaining the "Upgrade" to Acrobat 9 Pro ($159.00).

Cannot to speak to how effective it is as I've not used it.
But, "Any port in a storm." may be applicable, eh?
