Document "Default" layout & magnification will not default to program display preferences

No matter what I do with my program-level page display preferences, pdf files with document properties page layout and magnification set to "Default" still ignore my default settings (Single page/fit page) and open at 228% magnification.

When the document layout and magnification properties are known to be set to "default" why would the program page display preferences still be ignored?

Hi,

I guess that Acrobat needs to use a 228% magnification to "fit page" on your screen…

Try to set your default preferences to a 100% magnification: this should let you know if your Preferences settings works as expected.

Thanks but ... unfortunately, been there, done that, without success. As I said, no matter what I do with my program preference page display settings, and when the document level properties page layout and magnification are set to "Default," the document (or program?) still ignores my default program-level settings. The fact pattern cited in my first post was just one example.

I have a laptop connected to a 22" flat screen. All things being the same as stated above, and regardless of the program-level default layout and zoom settings (and I've tried them all), what I describe above occurs regardless of whether I use the laptop screen or the peripheral screen. The only difference between the two screens is the magnification level of the document when it is opened (228% on the larger screen, 160% on the laptop screen).

I've scoured the display settings in the Windows control panel but find nothing on the face of the available settings that seems related.

Hi David,

Under Edit -> Preferences ->General -> Documents category in the Open Settings section is "Restore Last View Settings When Reopening Documents" checked? If it is try unchecking it and see if that fixes it.Hope this helps,

Hi Dimitri,

Thanks for the suggestion. Good thought, but that preference is not checked.

I receive many pdf files from people who simply know how to scan to pdf and email the file as an attachment. That's why this so frustrating: I set my program level preferences so that I can quickly review incoming documents, but am still forced to adjust the magnification for each one. I get a little grumpy when I must do this dozens of times each day.

As another thought, I've experienced a couple of oddities the last few months that I've posted and seem to puzzle others. Nothing major, just some quirks here and there, like this one. I'm beginning to wonder whether I have a mildly defective installation. That doesn't seem likely, at least to me, but are defective installations known to occur occasionally with Acrobat?

Hi David,

That's hard to say. I've heard of many people doing a Repair and having that solve a myriad of weird problems that crop up. Then again, now that Acrobat is being updated every quarter with dot releases, there have been quite a few cases of reported issues with each one, i.e., something breaks that used to work. I can't imagine how large the code base is for Acrobat, and when you tinker with something so large and complex, stuff happens. That's not much help I know.

Thank you again Dimitri. I performed the repair operation and rechecked after restarting the computer, but that unfortunately did not correct the defect. I do appreciate your suggestion though.

You should try to locate the Acrobat's Preferences file and delete it, but, as a Mac user, I can't help you to find where this file is stored on Windows.

Can anyone tell me the name & location of the Acrobat "Preferences" file in Windows? I searched for it unsuccessfully. If I delete the Preferences file, do the preferences revert to default settings, or is a new file created with my existing preferences when I re-open Acrobat?

Also, in addition to Acrobat Pro 9.4.4, I have Adobe Reader 9.4.4 installed on the same computer. I set Reader page display default preferences to the same settings in both programs with no change in outcome of the original issue described above, but would appreciate any comments about whether having both programs installed is a bad idea.

PROBLEM SOLVED. I finally discovered the source of my frustration with this problem. For all of those puzzled by it, the answer is in Preferences, > Accessibility. In that dialog box there are two options to "Override Page Display." Both of these were checked in my preferences. After deselecting both, the default settings for Page Display became effective for all documents that do not have document-specific page display settings.

Hi David,

Thanks for letting us know what the solution was- GEE!! I don't really use the accessibility features much but still.... I'm left wondering how you discovered that?

Good Find!

It kept nagging at me in the back of my head that there must be something in another preference setting, so I started going through each one and found this. You would think that Adobe would cross reference the two. Maybe they have by now in Acrobat X. Thanks Demitri.

David,

I saw your post and thought you solved a nagging problem I have been having with Acrobat X, i.e., converting to PDF results in 172% mag. I set the Default layout and zoom for single pag continuous and 125% but that did not help. I just tried your Accessibility option and set the override page display to the same settings. Still no luck! Any help? Anyone?

thanks,
