Editing Adobe 5 pdf in Adobe 9 Pro

I have older pdf's created with Adobe 5. I need to edit them using Adobe 9 Pro. I am able to open the files in Adobe 9 Pro. I am able to replace and delete pages. Everything seems fine until I try to save the revised file. That's when I get errors, like the file cannot be read, the file cannot be saved, etc.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 9.2, Windows

try this: first, optimize the file in AA9 and save with a unique file name. then make revisions. let us know the outcome.

I optimized, but upon hitting save I got this error: "The document could not be saved. There was a problem reading this document (14)."

Is AA9 supposed to support AA5 files? I can't find anything about this on the web. When I upgraded to AA9 I just assumed that it would read/edit the older files.

I would just start over with new AA9 files, but I have around fifty manuals that contain 200+ unique documents each, so if there is a way to get the AA5 files to work with AA9, that would be wonderful.

When I contacted Adobe support they told me that my problem was because Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro was not compatible with Windows 7 and that I would need to install all of the updates to 9.4.1...Didn't sound right, but I'm up to 9.4.1 now and still the same issue.

eta: I had already tried editing this file before I optimized the file, so that may be why it didn't work for me.

I think I've found an answer. It would be nice if AA9 just did this for me...

Open file, save as unique file name.

Do not make any changes before executing save as.
If you make any changes before executing save as, then your file becomes unreadable by AA9.
Thank goodness for backup files. I guess I'm off to "save as" a bunch of files.

Please let me know if anybody has more information about this issue!

Thanks!
