Editing text in PDF documents

I have a foreign language translation agency. I translate English language PDF documents into other languages, which leads me to several font-related questions that I have.

I am using Acrobat Standard, 8.1, and my OS is Windows XP.

First, one PDF document scenario is, when trying to replace English text with the text of another language, I receive the following message:

Warning! Since the original font is not available, a substituted font for editing is used. Any changes to the text of the original font will place a new font dependency on the document.

The original font is Helvetica-Oblique. The editing font is Arial, Italic. Permissions = can embed.

Second, another PDF document scenario is, when trying to replace English text with the text of another language, I receive the following message:

All or part of the selection has no available system font. You cannot add or delete text using the currently selected font. The font used, for both original and editing, is Optima-Regular. Permissions = no system font available.

When I tried to change this to TimesNewRoman, I get the following message:

The change to a different font was not done because the chosen font and the font encoding in the document differ and could not be resolved.

Can either or both of these issues be solved with Acrobat Standard??? Or, is there another software that will solve them???

My Product Information:

Hi,

Editing fonts within Acrobat is always an interesting exercise. Since Acrobat 6, to edit a font you must have the exact same font as originally used. This ensures Adobe keeps all the font foundry's happy by only allowing people who own the font to edit the font inside Acrobat Standard or Professional.

If you are attempting to edit a font and you are not allowed then either buy the font, ask them to re-create with a font you own or attempt to change the font but this does not always work due to encoding problems.

I am not aware of any other PDF utilities which can overide some of these font restrictions - my advice would be to use Acrobat 5 since it does not have these problems (wink, wink) ...

all the best

Jon

I've been using Acrobat since v1.0 and still get amazed by its power. An Acrobat ACE since 1999
