Embedding Fonts

Using Acrobat 8.0 Standard, how to I embed fonts? In order to file a document with the USPTO (Patent Office) it must be Acrobat and all fonts must be embedded. I am printing as an Adobe PDF and ensuring that "rely on system fonts only" is checked OFF and that the print menu box "print as image" is not checked off.

How do I embed fonts to get the USPTO to accept files? They are not able to clearly identify HOW. Thank you!

Hi sfchacon,

Embedding fonts within a PDF is part of the PDF Creation process. Since there are many different methods to create a PDF, there is no one exact process to embed fonts. However, I'll outline the most common process -- PDFMaker macro or Print to Adobe PDF. If you're using either of theses steps to create a PDF make sure the following is set:
PDFMaker macro
1. Under the Adobe PDF menu in Word (or whatever program you are using) select Change Conversion settings.
2. Under PDFMaker settings select Standard from the drop-down menu for Conversion Settings. This setting automatically embedds fonts (you can also create your own custom setting).
Adobe PDF Printer
1. In the Print menu select the Properties button for the Adobe PDF printer.
2. Under the Default settings pull-down make sure "Standard" is selected (again you can create your own).

You might also want to investigate the PDF/A settings as well. The PDF/A settings are used to create Adobe PDF documents that are to be checked or must conform to PDF/A-1b, an ISO standard for the long-term preservation (archival) of electronic documents.

Hope this helps,
Lori
