Garbage characters at the start of a PDF

I just upgraded to Acrobat 8.1 so that I can use Office 2007 along with it.
Creating my first PDF with Acrobat 8.1 is turning into a nightmare.
At the beginning of the document I have a TOC. When I convert the Word DOC to PDF, the beginning of the PDF has a bunch of garbage characters, similar to this:
58B57B91B90B89B56B55B88B87B86B73B85B72B84B71B54B70B83B53B82B52B81B51B80B50B69B79B78B77B76B75B74B49B48B47B68B46B67B45B44B43B42B4B66B40B39B38B37B36B35B34B65B64B63B62B61B60B59B0BTable of Contents

Has anyone seen anything like this, and if so, how do I get rid of it? I can only assume it's some sort of formatting issue, but I can't find anything in my Word Document that would cause this. In fact, this section is identical to the one I create using Word 2003 and Acrobat 7, which converted with no problems at all a few months ago.

Thanks

Are you running a 64-bit OS? If so, this might be corrected by the Microsoft Hot Fix, which is documented in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article #930627 available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930627. There is a known issue with 64-bit versions of these operating systems running 32-bit applications that cause the Adobe PDF Printer to not work correctly.
