How can you save PDF with hidden text showing

Hi,

I have a PDF of a textbook that I wrote. I don't know what the original software was that created the material, but I had the company download the book in PDF. This was in 2004 if that makes any difference.

I had the company, now out of business, download the 2 versions of the textbook. One is the student version and the other is annotated instructor's edition (AIE). In the AIE version, some of the pages do not show the annotations, which are for the most part answers in the exercise sets.

When I use Examine Document and view Hidden text > Show preview > Show both hidden and visible text, the page is shown the way the AIE should be other than color. What I would like to do is to save a copy of the AIE that show the hidden text when it is opened and will also print the hidden text.

There are no layers and I have tried some different commands in preflight, but have not been successful. I could use some guidance on how to make the hidden show and stay shown.

Thanks, Terry

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 9.0, Windows

I'd need to see the actual PDF file to even a chance of helping.

I can send you a sample page, or you can go to http://bjkp.com > eBooks and download the sample. Page 54 would be a good example to look at. The document is not locked.
Thanks, Terry

Hi Joel,

Do you have any suggestions on how to bring the hidden text forward permanently?

Thanks, Terry

A fix that works on some of the pages is to select the Object Select Tool > Ctrl+A the fields get selected > delete, and then use the TouchUp Object tool to delete the buttons.Unfortunately, this only works on some of the pages. Any other suggestions?

I've looked at your file, and the answers hidden in the AIE version are covered with white-filled empty text annotations - so if you print the file with "Document" instead of "Document and markups" selected on the print dialog, they all appear. Not exactly secure if the students have the same version though...

If you want to remove all the annots from the PDF, use Preflight > single fixups > search for "annot" to pull up the "remove all annotations" fixup, and run it. Of course that will also remove your buttons and links too, but you can create a new Profile that only reacts to text annotation types if you need to. I'm working on a series of Preflight tutorials and I'll include this type of scenario in there someplace.

as noted by uvsar, the 'hidden' text is actually text with visible font that is masked by a white filled text box (a text box that has no text). text boxes are comments. open the comments panel where you may examine, sort, show (filter), search and delete any or all comments. your aim seems to be to delete all masking comments. with careful sorting and filtering you can identify and select the masking comments. you can delete them one by one or by subsets or by all at once. with a ctrl+a plus delete you can select and delete all filtered and displayed comments. (caution: ten text box comments have text "back to preface" or "enlarge" content. each of the 10 serves as label for a hyperlink. also, there are numerous 'pencil' comments.) you will need to experiment and get the hang of filtering and sorting masking comments for deletion.

Hi UVSAR,

That is a different fix than the one I listed above. If I do print document and change the output to Adobe PDF, that will save the page with the AIE showing. I am now able to fix the documents in the section labeled eBooks, but the documents in the sections Educational Software and Print Textbooks will not work with either method. I can see the AIE text material, but I cannot show it. Do you have any fix for those pages?

The most perplexing pages are clean looking text in the Print Textbooks section. They have no buttons and, as with the others, the AIE is hidden below. I can send them, or you can go to http://bjkp.com > Print Textbooks > Elementary Algebra 4th Edition With Applications > El Alg 4th Textbook. Three examples to look at would be page 54 (78 of 208), 103 (127 of 208), or 127 (151 of 208). The document is not locked.I can send you a sample page of the Educational Software, or you can go to http://bjkp.com > Educational Software > Educational Software and download the sample entitled Beginning Algebra 5.0 Chapter 3. Two examples to look at would be page 206 (22 of 46) or 215 (31 of 46). The document is not locked. If you can get the AIE to show in the Print Textbooks section, I think the same steps would work for the Educational Software section. In fact, if you can get the print section to work, I would not need to use the Educational Software to make an AIE version.

All of this is in preparation for adding some more material to one of my free websites -- http://TotallyFreeMath.com. If you search free math textbook, my site is number 1 out of 15 million. No ads, no tracking, just free. I hope I can get the AIE uncovered, it will be a nice addition for people using the site. By the way, I used to ride a 1969 Bultaco Bandido.

Thanks for you help, Terry

Hi rbogie,

Your fix does a nice job also. I have played with it on a few pages and I see that if I don't like what happen when I hit delete, ctrl+z will reverse it. Thank you for your suggestion.

Do you have any suggestions for my previous post concerning the PDFs in the Print Textbooks or Educational Software sections at http://bjkp.com ?

Thanks for your help, Terry

Hi,

This is what I have so far. Below are a few fixes that work on some of the pages. These fixes may be all that someone reading this thread needs. I can fix the documents in the section on http://bjkp.com labeled eBooks, but the documents in the sections Educational Software and Print Textbooks will not work with any of these methods. I can see the AIE text material, but I cannot show it. Does anyone have a fix for those pages?

If you can get the AIE to show in the Print Textbooks section, I think the same steps would work for the Educational Software section. In fact, if you can get the print section to work, I would not need to use the Educational Software to make an AIE version. Some methods that work on the eBook section are:

Method 1 – In my situation, the AIE materials are covered with white-filled empty text annotations - so if I print the file with "Document" instead of "Document and markups" selected on the print dialog, the AIE materials all appear. If when I go to print, I change from a printer to Adobe PDF, the file is saved without the white boxes and the AIE showing.

Alternate to method 1 – The 'hidden' text is actually text with visible font that is masked by a white filled text box (a text box that has no text). Text boxes are comments. Open the comments panel where you may examine, sort, show (filter), search and delete any or all comments. Unfortunately, this only works on some of the pages.Method 2 – To remove all the annots from the PDF, use Preflight > single fixups > search for "annot" to pull up the "remove all annotations" fixup, and run it. This will also remove buttons and links, but you can create a new Profile that only reacts to text annotation types if you need to.Best regards, Terry

The "Print Textbooks" versions set the hidden text to have a "white" character fill - they're not obscured by anything above them.

The "white" in question is a spot color rather than process white (0,0,0,0) which makes it possible to change them:

Open Convert Colors on the Print production panel.
Click "Ink manager" on the bottom left, choose "white" and alias it to Process Black. Don't tick the "convert all" box.
Under Matching Criteria choose "Any CMYK" from the Color Type selector and "Text" from the Object Type selector.
Click OK to convert, then save your PDF.

*Note that on page 135 of the example you link to, there is a complex RGB vector shape of a brick patio which has some invalid text objects inside it that defeat the Convert Colors tool. You'll need to open the Content navigator pane on the left of the Acrobat UI, open page 135, select the series of "text" objects with nothing shown inside them, delete them, THEN run the Convert Colors command as above.

Hi UVSAR,

With a page open, under Advanced > Print Production > Convert Colors > Ink Manager > Click on the white box (not the symbol to the left of the white box), which highlights it > drop down Ink Alias > Process Black > OK .....Color Type > Any CMYK Object Type > Text > OK .....This operation cannot be undone. Would you like to proceed? > Yes ...
Save PDF ....

I still don’t get any of the AIE to appear. Is there something I might have checked or didn’t check? I didn’t check the convert all box in the Ink Manager. ...

Thanks for looking at this, Terry
