How to mark page for return in Acrobat Reader?

Hello,

I'm sure this question has been answered _somewhere_, but I cannot find it, because what *I* call a "bookmark", Adobe/Acrobat Reader is calling something pre-determined by the document creator.

I want to be able to "mark the page" where I am at when I am reading a document, in this case, a book, so that when I re-open it, the document will return to the place that I mark.

There's gotta be a way to do this in such an advanced program. If someone could _please_ tell me how, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

Best regards,

~Antonio

Hello try67,

Thank you sooooo much!!! I probably should have asked this before, or in a separate post, but if you don't mind, could you please tell me how to highlight, underline, and add comments to text in my book? (The Adobe help on this was quite vague. First it says that you can only do some things if your document allows it, then it goes on to tell how to do other things, so I'm not sure if this book allows me to highlight, underline, and comment, but I wouldn't imagine why not, since it _is_ a book.

Your help is GREATLY appreciated tonight/this morning! Happy day to you!!!

I think you're taking the "book" concept a bit too literally. Editing a regular book (with a pen or a marker) is nothing like editing a digital book.

Adobe Reader is just that, a reader. The files that you open in it can be read, but in order to manipulate them (like by adding comments and highlights, or changing the page order, etc.), the file must have special permissions given to it by the creator.
To check if a specific file can be edited in this way you should open it and then go to File - Properties (or just Ctrl+D), Security tab. It lists what you can and can't do.
If commenting is allowed, you should be able to see the commenting tools in Reader's menus.

Dear try67,

I apologize; hopefully this will be my _last_ question. If I had a copy of the Adobe Acrobat CREATOR, could I modify the Annotation Permissions? (I checked, and the "book" does not allow notations.) If not, is there another program that can do this, and if so, which one? I don't think that it's too much to ask to be able to highlight, underline, and comment/write notes in, even an ebook. It's not as bad as copying it for people or something...

Thanks for your help!!! Take good care,

~Antonio

First of all, the name of that application is simply Adobe Acrobat, but there are different versions of it: Standard, Pro and Pro Extended. Only the Pro versions can allow commenting in Reader.
To answer your question, I believe so (unless the file has been encrypted, in which case you can't change its security settings without the password), but with Acrobat you don't need any permissions to apply commenting.

Have a look here for a comparison of the different versions of Reader/Acrobat:

If a PDF has permission restrictions applied by an author, they can only be removed in Acrobat by someone who knows the password used to apply those restrictions - i.e. the document author - so just buying Acrobat won't let you apply comments if the PDF is secured (there'll be a padlock on the top left of the screen).

Unsecured PDFs can of course be commented upon in Acrobat, and in some other third party PDF reader applications - but not in Adobe Reader 9 unless the extension has been activated, as try67 explains above. Commercial eBooks are almost always secured for obvious reasons, but are almost never Reader-extended, as mixing restrictions for print, content copying and commenting is not as flexible as it needs to be.

Hello, and thank YOU for YOUR reply! I installed the Acrobat Pro Trial version, and opened the document in question, and it does not have a lock on it. The strange thing is that it will let it be copied and printed, but not narrated [from Reader].

Can you please tell me, once I have the ebook open in Acrobat Pro, what I need to do to enable Notations on the saved version, then save it with those "permissions". I cannot figure out which menu item will turn this off for the save version. I tried checking the Notation permissions in Acrobat, and they were enabled, so I saved the PDF with a different file name and then opened it in Reader, and the Notation permissions were DISabled.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated. It is just this one ebook, and I only want to highlight and underline text and make side notes. It's not like I am redistributing it or anything. It is in VB Scripting, so it is quite complicated and I need these features to get through it.

Thanks again,

~Antonio
