I want to create a word index of a PDF document showing page numbers for each occurence of the word in the document. Just like ones you find in books. How do I do this? I can create an embedded index and search it, but now I want to take that information and make it into a list that will appear at the end of the document. Is this possible?

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 9.0, Windows

I would create the index as part of the Word document using Word's Index and Table fields. Then convert the entire Word document to a PDF using the appropriate Word to PDF conversion settings.

Thanks. An index was already created in Word, but when the document was converted to PDF, the page numbers did not correspond. I don't know why it did not correspond, someone else did this and now it's my problem. Is there any way to create the index in Acrobat?

You need to make sure Word is not reflowing the document structure by choosing the Adobe PDF printer and setting the margins as needed. You may also need to turn off the 'reflow for accessibility' and select which Word structures you want converted to bookmarks under the "Bookmark" tab.
