jumble up letters

i have a problem with my adobe acrobat 6.0 standard. When I try to print .pdf files, they print mostly OK, but some of the type is jumbled so some letters print on top of other letters, and some of the spacing is off.

Can you provide more information as to the OS , appliction and verson authoring the source document, Acrobat version, and method being used to create the PDFs?

I am using windows xp, adobe acrobat 6.0 standard, and word 2003 to pdf to the printer.
