Lost bookmarks after splitting pdf

I compiled several hundred pages of documents into one and then wanted to split it up into 2 documents. When I split the document I lost all the bookmarks, many of which I had to manually set. The same thing happened when I tried to do the same thing by extracting the pages. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a setting that I am missing?

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 9.2, Windows

for splitting big.pdf use this technique (for illustration big.pdf has 100 pages): make two copies (keeping big.pdf intact); from bigcopy1.pdf delete pages 51-100 (leaving pages 1-50). from bigcopy2.pdf delete pages 1-50 (leaving pages 51-100). bookmarks remain intact. delete superflous bookmarks from each.

Thanks so much for your response. That is exactly what I wound up doing. Having said that it seems counter productive to me to be able to extract or split pages from a document without keeping the bookmarks intact.
