Maximum file size for one pdf document

Our law firm will be outsourcing a large scanning project (20,000 color pages). The outsourcing firm wants to scan all of these pages into one pdf file, rather than naming each file (two pages each) separately. We need to produce this document to opposing counsel on DVD. We are concerned about problems that might arise with a document of this size. What is the maximum file size that you recommend for one pdf document? Thank you.

According the the PDF 1.7 Reference, a PDF file has an architechtural size limit of approximately 10 gigabytes. Also, the amount of memory available to a viewer application limits the number of memory-consuming objects that can be held simultaneously. Because each PDF is unique (i.e, scanned/text/graphics), there is not a recommended document size. However, a very large document can be difficult to navigate and search depending on how it has been setup.
