i have acrobat acrobat 8.1 standard on my pc. the program is taking up 655 mb space on my hd is this correct? photoshop cs3 is only 71 mb and lightroom 80 mb why in the world does this program take up 655 mb and if that is correct do i need it? i use convert to pdf for a word or excel file that i occasionally send someone else but it's not worth 655 mb i'd rather fax. what am i missing here? my machine is sluggish and i'm trying to clean it up. it is a dell laptop w/120 hd and 4 g of RAM. I obviously don't know anything about Acrobat so anyone's shared expertise will be most appreciated. Thank you.

This sounds about right --here are the specs for Acrobat 8:
Intel® Pentium® III processor or equivalent
Microsoft® Windows® 2000 with Service Pack 4; Windows Server® 2003 (32-bit or 64-bit editions) with Service Pack 1; Windows XP Professional, Home, Tablet PC, or 64-bit Editions with Service Pack 2; or Windows Vista™ Home Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate, Business, or Enterprise (32-bit or 64-bit editions)
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or 7
256MB of RAM (512MB recommended)
490MB of available hard-disk space; cache for optional installation files (recommended) requires an additional 280MB of available hard-disk space
1,024x768 screen resolution
CD-ROM drive, if installing from a CD
Internet or phone connection required for product activation

BTW -- Photoshop CS3 recommends 1GB of hard disk space available (+ more during installation)

yes, thank you. Then unless i use this program a great deal why have it? should i just be using Reader for converting eccasional files to PDF? Is there a way to only install some features but not all in Acrobat? Thank you for your help.

The installation procedure allows you to do a typical install or custom. If you really want to slim things done you can take a look at a custom installation. Only problem is, sometime down the road you may actually want some functionaly in Standard that you don't have installed, so just remember this for future reference.

Yes, it's correct.
Notice that since Mac requires both PowerPC and Intel code Acrobat 8 is taking about 1,1 Go...
