Missing characters after combining / replacing pages in Acrobat Pro 8.3.1

I have an original PDF file and one or more single page PDF files to replace pages in the original . The resulting file has random missing characters. All files use the same fonts, and they are embedded (subset). I have verified that they are actually embedded. I need to use subsetting because the resulting file is for a website.

Preflight of the resulting file shows missing glyphs, which are the characters missing.

I have been struggling with this for a while, and found some references to the same problem, but no solutions.

Any ideas???

David,

Sorry, this is known behavior for earlier versions of Acrobat. Merging two files that contain a different subset of the same font can lead to missing or swapped characters. Older PDF applications can suffer from this.

I've had some luck with un-embedding & re-embedding the fonts, but there is no 100% fix.

Thanks for the response! I don't mind upgrading to the current version if it will solve the problem.

So this issue has been fixed in the most recent version of Acrobat??

Thank you!

Yes, this should be better in Acrobat 10. Provided the fonts are included in the original PDFs properly. You can download the trial to test before purchasing 10.
