Missing letters when combing files using Adobe Pro 8

A Word 2003 document was converted into PDF format using Adobe Pro 8 and then combined with other PDF files using Combine File feature. When the document is combined letters are missing in this one particular document. I've tried combining the file in it's original format (Word 2003) and its the same result. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Pro 8, uninstalled Adobe Reader 8.1 (thinking that may have had something to do with it) and it still happens. I've tried it using someone else's pc with the same result. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Are you embedding all your fonts each time the PDFs are created before you combine them?

To check if the fonts are embedded you can do a Ctrl +d (windows) and select the font tab. When you create the PDF, if you use the PDFMaker macro, select Change Conversion Settings. If you use the Standard setting from the Conversion Settings: pull-down menu the fonts will automatically be embedded.

If this is not the method you use to create PDFs let us know.

Recently had an off-set printer print a 4-page newsletter. A pdf created originally in CS4 InDesign. Looks fine on the screen. Prints out fine on local printer. But when it was printed by the off-set printer, the "fi" combinations dropped out.

Font used was Times New Roman. The font was embedded. An "fl" combination also dropped out.
Curiously, a few "fi" combinations printed.

What went wrong and how do we avoid this happening in the future?

When I go to advanced editing and highlight the text, the "i's" are not highlighted in the "fi" combinations. The f's are, but neither letter prints.

Hi Nancyowho

It's always best to preflight your PDF to check for these potential issues. You can use the PDF/X-1a:2001 option since this checks for many things such as fonts embedding etc.

Run your PDF through the preflight and see what errors are produced? Another angle to this would be the rendering equipment at your print providers - are they using up-to-date rips?

Anyhow, let us know on the preflight front and we'll see if we can help?

All the best,

Jon

I've been using Acrobat since v1.0 and still get amazed by its power. An Acrobat ACE since 1999
