multiple PDF files open rapid fire, one after the other

When opening a PDF in Acrobat Professional 8, multiple files open, one after the other until the "maximum number of files are already open" warning box appears shutting Acrobat down. Anytime I try to open a PDF on my Apple, or online, this rapid fire opening of past PDFs starts and ends with the "maximum number of files" warning. Any solutions?

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.1.7, Macintosh

No - I have not reinstalled - I have a CS3 Design Premium Disk Set and I am not sure how to reinstall only Acrobat.

Thank you -- I cannot open Acrobat. Upon opening this rapid fire opening of past PDFs starts. Then the Program shuts down after opening the Maximum amount of PDFs. Any other suggestions? Can I delete Acrobat and reinstall??

Sure, you can try reinstall Acrobat to see if it corrects the problem.

What OS are you running?

I FOUND THE SOLUTION!
I stumbled upon a fix!!!!!!!!!!!
After all the files stopped opening, and the warning sign appeared, I continually click on the warning OK button until it stopped. Then I closed each and every open PDF until I had closed them all.

The I went to File/Open Resent File/History/Clear History ... and that was the solution!

Because all the files that were opening were ones I had recently done, I got to thinking, was there a way to clear out the History, and IT WORKED!!!!

I hope this helps anyone with the same problem.

Actually, for PC that is, there is a much easier fix to that: I have a machine with 8GB RAM and hence Adobe won't stop opening files for a long time... it went on and on and on...
The way out:
Open Taskmanager and kill the process "Acrobat.exe".
Open the registry editor and delete the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\\RememberedViews\cRestartFilesin my case that was:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\8.0\RememberedViews\cRestartFiles

After deleting that key, problem solved.

thinking deleting history is only a temp fix and not a long term solution. must be another underlying problem

I am having the same problem on my Mac OSX 10.4.11 with Adobe Reader 8. It is incredibly frustrating. I recently scanned a bunch of documents into PDF files on my computer. Now whenever I click on anything that is in pdf format on the internet, every PDF that I recently created opens up in rapid-fire. Then I have to individually close each one before I can do anything else. The suggestion above does not work with Adobe Reader 8 -- the only thing that happens when you click on "open recent file" is that I get a list of recent documents created -- there is no "history" or "clear history" menu item. Help!!!
