Navigation Panel default fails, Icons do nothing when open and clicked

I have searched for two days, nothing to explain why I can't set the Navigation Panel to stay open as a default when openin documents. It will not come back as a default either on one I have just opened it in when I re-open.

Working on a MacBook Pro 10.5.1 CS3 Acrobat Pro 8 has been reinstalled. Still can not make navigation panel remain open, F4 does not work on MacBook because it is set to volume up on system so I manually go to the menu bar to open the Navigation Pane. Once open on the left it is dead other than I get the tool tip, "Go to pages . . . ." It doesn't matter what I click on Pages (Bookmarks, Help etc) or any key combination I try, nothing happens. I have used the option key and still nothing shows. Clicking on the "pages" icon plus "control" gives me the Navigation panel icons. I thought I was supposed to have a few of the pages.

If I can't get this to work can I dump Acrobat 8 and use the Professional CS1 I have which did everything I needed and remained the working/viewing environment I needed to be productive.

I tried install the Acrobat update. Can't remember exact dialogue but it was not agreeable and wouldn't update. Need to find some way to get back to productivity. I read upwards of dozens of Pdfs in a day. Thanks.

This solution is for a Windows installation and may not work with your MacBook.

During the install and un-install process, some Acrobat files are not deleted and still remain on your hard drive. This suggestion is an alternative to editing the Systems Registry. It is assumed you did Deactivate Acrobat before you uninstalled it. If you did not Deactivate before uninstall, you've got problems that only Adobe Customer support can solve.

Note: These steps free up hard disk space and remove any damaged files (permanent and temporary) that the installer needs to overwrite but can't. Normally, the installer removes temporary files after it completes an installation. If problems occur, causing temporary files to remain, the installer may return an error the next time you try to install Acrobat.

1. Exit from all applications.
2. Uninstall Acrobat.
3. Search for and delete any .tmp files on your computer.
4. Delete the following items, if present, from the Documents and Settings/[ user profile ]/Local Settings/Temp folder:
Folders:

_istmp[ x ].dir
Files:
_ins[ x ]._mp
_inst32i.ex_
_inz[ x ]._mp
_isdel.exe
_istmp[ x ].dir
_setup.dll
_setup.lib
_wutl[ x ].dll
~ins[ x ].~mp
where " [ x ] " is any number

Re-start your computer and reinstall Acrobat. Once Acrobat is installed, Open the file and click File, Properties, Initial View and set the doc to Bookmark Panel and Page.
