I'm getting nowhere quickly, however.

Wherever I click, the entire document is highlighted. I can't grab anything.

Can some kind soul please pass on a few pointers?

How will this help me edit the document? Why am I getting the blue highlighting?

Tools > Advanced Editing > TouchUp Text Tool.I'm trying to prove I can edit our old PDF files using Acrobat 9 Pro so its purchase will be approved.

That's my objective.

After you've clicked on a page, can you drag the cursor to select some text?

It's a bit hard to say much without seeing one of the files in question. Can you make a sample available somehow? How were these files created? Is there any security applied to the files?

I think I know what the problem is. It's an image. The whole bloody thing. There was some low-level security, but I removed it during a Save-As. So how would I convert an image file into an editable non-image?

I don't have Acrobat 9 available to me at the moment, but in Acrobat Pro 7 you can use the following menu item:

Document > Recognize Text Using OCRIf you have a large number of documents to convert, you should consider using Adobe Capture software.
