Without knowing your operating system environment and scanner I can only recommend some general troubleshooting tips: - Can you scan from other applications? - Have you tried the Windows Image Acquisition driver if available (Windows) instead of the TWAIN? - If you're using a TWAIN device, have you tried updating to the latest version and reinstalling (it's possible that the driver is missing or damaged). - If you've successfully scanned before with Acrobat 8 you can try creating a new user account with admin privileges and then rescanning. It's possible that the user account is corrupt.
