Page Numbering

Hi,

I am currently using Acrobat 8, and am trying to get to grips with inserting page numbers via the header/footer option (should be simple I know). Basically, I have a 17 page document, and want the display page n of n as the footer on each sheet, however I do not want pages 1 & 2 to display a page number, instead the numbering should start on page 3 but be displayed as page 1 of 15.

Can anybody explain how I do this?

My Product Information:
Acrobat Standard 8.0, Windows

Hi tanny81,

I don't have Acrobat 8 Standard loaded on my machine right now but if the add header-footer options are the same as in Acrobat 8 Pro, when you invoke the Doument ->Add Header Footer menu item there is a link on the right side in the middle of the dialog labeled "Page Number and Date Format." If you click on that you can set the page number format to 1 of n and the start page number.Hope this helps,

Hi Thanks for the reply.

I have done what you suggested below, however changing the start page number doesn't change the page the footer counts from, just the number it counts from.

So for example, if I put Start Page Number = 3 it add the footer to my document but the first page then says page 3 of 17.

What I need is for the 3rd page to say Page 1 of ?? essentially disregarding pages 1 & 2Many Thanks

Hi tanny81,

In that same dialog there is a "Page Range Options" link. Set the numbering to start at page 3.

Hope this helps,

Hi tanny 81,

Well it worked for me so maybe it is best to start over fresh. These are the steps I took on a 4 page document and my results were that page 1 & 2 had no footer and page 3 was 1 of 2 and Page 4 was 2 of 2. See if the following steps work for you-1. First remove the footer you have, then go to Document - Header and Footer->Add.2. Click on the "Page Number and Date Format" link and set Page Number Format to Page 1 of n, and leave start page number at 1. Click OK.

3. Click on the Page Range Options and in Pages from: enter 3 to whatever the last page number is.

4. Now select the footer box you want to have ( left, center or right) by clicking that box, then click Insert Page Number. Click OK.

Hope this works for you this time. I don't think it should have anything to do with version differences between Pro and Stnd.

Hope this helps,

Dimitri

here's how to do it. First save a backup. Proceed as follows: extract pages 1 & 2 from your 17 page document. (place check at 'delete pages after extracting') Save the extracted 'pages from' file with meaningful name, say, 'pgs1-2'. The original file remains open, but sans the two extracted pages; the top page is the #3 that you want to number as '1 of 15'. Proceed to number the 15 pages in the usual way. Final step is to insert 'pgs1-2' selecting 'before first'. Job done!
