Page Numbering

Hi,

I am working with multiple pdf files and I'm wondering how I can add page numbers to all of them efficiently and effectively. Say I have 2 pdf files, for example:

PDF1 - 10 pages
PDF2 - 15 pages

I will need to label PDF1 1 pages 1 through 10. Then label PDF2 pages 11 through 25.

Of course, I could always combine all the files then number them, but this would not work for me as I need to keep all the articles separate for upload.

Additional, manual labeling isn't really an option when you are working with hundreds of pdf files.

Thank you for your help!

Acrobat Standard 9.3.1, Windows

You should invest in an upgrade to Acrobat Pro, as it can batch process files (including adding page numbers).

I do have Acrobat Pro. But how do I use batch processing to add numbers to many individual pdf files such that the page numbers are in running order from file to file (see my first post)? So far, I have only managed to make the numbering start from 1 for each file.

Thanks again!

Why not use the "Document => Header &Footer = > Add".For document 1, in the pop-up window, select the location, click the 'add page number', click the "OK" button.

For document 2, in the pop-up window, select the location, click the 'add page number', click the link for "Page Number and Date Format...", set the "Start Page Number" to "11", click the "OK" button for the format window, click the "OK" button for the "Add Header Footer" window.

If you need to change the Header/Footer, there are an options to edit and remove.

gkaiseril,

Thanks for the reply! I'm aware of the method, just not too keen on doing that for hundreds of times for separate pdf files. :( I was just wondering if there's any way to automate the process and do it in a more efficient manner.

Oh, I see now what you mean. For that you will need a custom script.
And the reason I didn't think you had Acrobat Pro is because in your original post you selected Acrobat Standard (which doesn't have the batch processing capability).

It is possible to use a batch process to add a form field or comment to every page and insert the consecutive numbers into each field or comment. But there can be problems, like a rotated page and the field or comment is placed on the side of the page and not the bottom with the text in the wrong orientation, the added field or comment could cover some content. Form field can be reset, may cause unnerving warnings for users with Reader, and comments do not always print (must be set by user).

You may need to create a global variable, and select each file to be processed one at a time in the order that you want them numbered, because of how Windows orders slections.

Hi gkaiseril,

Thank you for your reply! I'm heartened to know that its still within the realm of possibility within the Acrobat Pro's power despite other possible setbacks.

If it is not too much trouble, could you run me through the process of creating the batch process?

Thanks!

experiment with these basics: step 1: combine all files to be numbered; step 2: apply page numbers with header/footer tool; step 3: split the page numbered file by top level bookmarks.
