Do you mean you want to make a PDF compatible with earlier versions of Acrobat or Reader?
If yes, in Acrobat 7 you can use Reduce File Size under the File menu or PDF Optimizer under the Advanced menu. In Acrobat 8 the Reduce File Size command has been moved to the Document menu.
