PDF files I open in Acrobat 9 often are pixelated, but the same files opened using Adobe Reader are not. It does not seem to matter whether I create the PDF or receive one from someone at another company. Why is that? Is there some way to fix?

Hi,

in Acrobat and Reader you can set up several parameters for the rendering of PDF's on the screen.
Depending on the settings the image can look more pixelated or needle-sharp.
Check your settings under Edit > Preferences (or ctrl+k) > Page Display.

Thanks, Radzmar. Just before you posted, a vendor gave me the final answer. It was exactly what you said, but one step further: Edit>Preferences>Page Display>Smooth Text>Monitor (mine was set to "none," the other option is "laptop"). After choosing "monitor" the same document looks good both in Acrobat Pro and in Reader. Now I can use Acrobat Pro as my default program for PDF files again. My problem is fixed.
