Several aftermarket books are available on Acrobat (Donna Baker, Doug Sahlin, John Deubert, Adobe Systems Classroom in a Book, and others) and all provide you a nice explanation for using Acrobat Search and creating catalogs.
Now with Acrobat 8 you have the ability to embed an index file in a PDF document that can be copied to a CD-ROM. Just open a PDF and select Advanced > Document Processing > Manage Embedded Index. Acrobat will auutomatically create and embed the index for you.If you have a collection of PDF files you want to copy to a CD-ROM. Use Acrobat Catalog to create the index and copy the index files along with your PDFs to the CD. It's very intuitive and doesn't need a lot of detail explanation.
Play with it and if you have any problems, come back and post another question.
Best wishes,
