Reader does not function...

I have downloaded Acrobat Reader 8.1 at least twice, but when I try to open a PDF document from the internet, I get an error: "there was a problem with adobe acrobat/reader. please exist adobe acrobat/reader and try again." When I click OK, a dialog box opens asking whether I want to find an application or save. If I go to find, it just gets me back to where I would download Acrobat Reader. If I click save, then try to open, it does not seem to find that I have Reader installed. What do I do? Thanks,
Patrick

This Adobe article may help solve the problem.

Thanks a lot for the very quick response and the information. I think that info is for a MAC and I have a PC with Windows XP, so I could not use those instructions. There is not "preferences" option under my internet explorer toolbar or wherever. If you have the info for my pc and platform, that would be great!
Thanks
