At work we have Adobe Professional 8,and I made a pdf package of a 1 sheet document, then a multipage document combined into one pdf package. We send this out many times daily. Frequently we get an email back with the receipient unable to open the pdf. We've emailed to ourselves here, at home and are able to open it, but at least 5 - 10 times a day, someone can't open it. Could it be they have an older version of the reader and need the most to deal with a "package"? I want to keep it in the package combination since our database will only attach one document to an email when we send email via the database. Thanks so much.

Yes, packages were not introduced until version 8, see the "What's New" in Acrobat's complete help. You clients will need to update their versions of Reader, assuming that their IT support will allow this.
