Rectangles over text

They say there's no such thing as a stupid question but I'll come close....Here it is:- Way back in 2000 I first noticed these rectangles superimposed over the first letter of each word of text on a CD which had a video editing programme on it. I've had no other issues with Adobe until a week ago when I purchased another CD this time a car repair manual and lo and behold, there's the little rectangles on some of the 300 pages. It's probably a well known issue...except by me.

Sounds like a font issue. If you look under File --> Properties --> Description Tab
can you determine what application created the PDF? Also, under the Fonts Tab in the same menu does it list all fonts as embedded?

There has been an issue with faint boxes around graphic images in Word Docs. This first appeared with verison 5. I have not see a fix for this.

This disc opens with Internet Explorer (NOT Firefox) and the properties of one of the crook pages is:-

Swiss 721SWA (embedded subset)
True type
Encoding ANSI

Swiss721SWA (embedded subset)
True type CID
encoding identity-H

Then the first set is repeated

Then the second set is repeated, to make a total of four entries

Can I post a copy of the faulty page?? (I don't know how!)

Edited. Spelling

Swiss is a font that a software program called Interleaf (technical publishing software) used. Unfortunately, it appears that these fonts were improperly encoded into the PDF from this program. It's revealed in Acrobat 8 probably because of some changes in font handling. There is a thread from another member who has encountered this as well at Font display problem with Acrobat 8

You'll probably want to contact the company you purchased the CD from to let them know about the readability issue because they'll need to recreate the PDFs with proper encoding.

Yes, looks like that's the prob. The car repair manual would have been made in 2003.
Thanks again.
