Remove URLs

I am converting MS Word documents to pdf forms. When there is a link to a website in the Word document this converts as well, which is usually a good thing. At some point I need to remove this url link. I can select this using the “linking tool” and delete the text but the link is still there. It’s invisible until you mouse over it. Also when I delete the text the “underline” remains and I can’t figure out any way to get rid of this or change the color like to white.

I am using Office XP and Windows 2000. Adobe pro 7.09.

Acrobat 7 and later have an option to "automatically make links active" - where if it finds text that looks like a URL, it will make it an active links even if no link annotation is present. This is a USER preference.
