Searching index is slow

We have an extremely large catalog/index. We have 5.67GB of data and over 31,000 pdf files that we have indexed. We have four users that use the index concurrently. The documents and the index are located on a Windows 2003 server.

The problem that we have been running into for the last several months is that the searching of the index is SOMETIMES extremely slow. I have not been able to find any rhyme or reason as to what is going on during the searching on either the users local system or our server. It is very intermittant.

I was wondering if there is a suggested limit for indexes. Should I break the one large index into perhaps 3 or 4 smaller ones? Or, is there something else I should be looking at (suggestions)?

this is a complex issue. if there are are subsets within the 31000 documents whereby a user would want to search one subset or a combination of subsets (and exclude other subsets), it would be practical to create an index for each subset. see 'Adobe Help - Searching PDFs' at the link below. as to the intermittent slowness, your systems admn should be consulted. should you need expert assistance with efficient searching of PDFs, shoot me an email.
