Start with navigation panel buttons hidden

I'm running Adobe Reader 8.0.0 on a Windows XP SP2. Without using the option "Restore last view settings when reopening documents", how can you make Adobe Reader start with the navigation panel buttons hidden? I want to maximize the viewing space right from the start and I don't like to always have to hide the navigation panel buttons by hand (mouse). I would like it to start hidden, and only activate it explicitly when I need it (e.g. from within a menu).

Thank you,
Petre Huica

Hi Petre,

The Initial View settings option is not available in Adobe Reader. Initial View options can only be set with Acrobat Standard or Professional. Once the Initial View settings for a file are saved in Stnd or Pro, the file will open with those settings in Reader and over-ride the Reader default settings.

Hope that helps,

Dimitri

Hello Dimitri,

I believe I should reformulate my question to better understand it. What I would like to achieve is to open "new" pdf documents (that have NEVER been previously opened) in such a way that the navigation panel buttons are initially hidden. I have figured how to do it for "known" pdf documents (documents that I have ALREADY opened at least once), by enabling the "Restore last view settings when reopening documents", as I said before. I would like to do that also for "new" documents. If I read you well, you are referring to reopening files too: "Once the Initial View settings for a file are saved in Stnd or Pro...". If I'm not mistaken, what you are suggesting is achievable in Adobe Reader by using the aforementioned option, without the need for Adobe Standard or Pro. I would like to have this functionality for "new" pdf files.

I hope my question is clearer now.

Best regards,
Petre

Hi Petre,

The author or creator of a PDF can set the intial view properties using Acrobat Standard or Professional and those settings will be what you see when you first open the PDF in Reader. The author's initial view settings will over-ride your Reader preferences- your only option is to change it after you have opened it the first time.

Basically, if you are opening PDF files created by other people you get the initial view they want you to get when you open the file- there is no setting in Reader to prevent or over-ride that.

Hope that helps,

Dimitri

Hi Dimitri,

Now it's all clear, thank you.
However, the vast majority of the pdfs I have seen opened initially with exactly the same view: document from the top, navigation panel open on the left, 2 buttons up, 2 buttons down, the same. To me it looks like some kind of default initial view in case the author doesn't specify one in particular. In this case, it's this internal Reader default initial view that would have to change in order to have the navigation panel hidden if the author doesn't use a particular initial view setting. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Also, if this was the case, would it require filing a change request to Adobe for this to be reflected in a future version of Reader?

Best regards,
Petre

quite easy:
on windows Start ->regedit
change under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\8.0\RememberedViews\c1\xViewDef\
bAVDocViewTabsShowing = 0
bAVToolBarHostView_ToolBarsShowing = 0
bwindowMaximized = 1
hope this can help.

Is there a registry setting to set the default view to Page Navigation Panel open?

If you edit the Windows registry, make sure you back it up and know how to restore it if needed. A single mistake can cause a lot of problems. This is not an intermediate users task. I rate as an advance to very advance task aloong with directly editing hard disk sectors.

I understand this. I am definitely an advanced user. I asked if there was a way to set this in the registry. Is there?
