Table of contents in PDF files

Hello there, I know this is a trivial question for most of you but I'm quite new at this and wonder how it is done. I know how to do it in MS Word, is it about the same procedure here? Of course the t.o.c. must be "clickable".
Thanks!

Acrobat has no such feature. If you want a TOC, you should create it in Word (or whatever application was used to create the original file), and then convert it again to PDF.

OK, thanks. So if the t.o.c. is "clickable" in MS Word it will also be "clickable" in the pdf-file I create from the word document?

Should be, yes. Make sure you use PDFMaker, and not print to a PDF, though.

Hello again, are you really sure that you can't create a "clickable" table of contents using the Adobe programs Acrobat for example? I have been told that you can edit a pdf document in Adobe Acrobat and create a clickable t.o.c.! Is this not correct?

Hi Kaunda,

While there is no TOC create feature in Acrobat, you can use the Acrobat Link tool to create links in a PDF whereever you wish. It is more work to do it that way since each link must be created manually, but doable.

Hope this helps,

Hi Dimitri

I've just installed Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro. I have a word document with a table of contents with hyperlinks that work. But when I convert this into PDF using Adober Acrobat 9 Pro, the hyperlinks are lost. Do you have any idea why this is?

Thanks/Trudy

Convert using the PDFMaker plugin, not by printing to PDF.

Well, I originally said that there's no tool to create a TOC in Acrobat, but now there is...
I developed a script that converts a file's bookmarks structure to a fully functional TOC.
