Text prints as black boxes

We regularly get PDFs from architects (usually created using Acrobat Distiller 7.0 with PDF Version 1.4 / Acrobat 5.x). When we view them in Adobe Reader (Mac or Windows), the text looks fine but prints as solid black boxes no matter which printer or plotter (even a simple HP LaserJet). If we view them using Apple's Preview app, we ALSO see the text as solid black boxes. What's happening and how can we fix/work around this?

Try checking the font used in the PDF. Make sure the font is not licensed and it's install in Acrobat and on your OS.

Eugene,

Greetings! Thanks for the reply on this.

We don't create the PDFs, but I will be sure to ask the creators about the fonts being used. Even so, isn't it odd that the font is displayed on-screen? Maybe it's licensed in different ways depending on the output media?

No idea - just thinking out loud ... :)

The plot thickens - I looked at the document properties on my end. "Fonts Used in this Document" is blank! Hmm ...
