Unable to Insert, Extract, Delete etc. pages from scanned document

Scanned and emailed a document to myself. With thumbnails open, all options for inserting, extracting etc. pages are grayed out and unusable. Any suggestions? Surely it's something simple I'm missing. I'm using Acrobat 9.

Thanks in advance.

It may be that you inadvertently used the PDF/A feature when scanning to PDF. When a PDF/A file is opened in Acrobat (and you're viewing the file in PDF/A mode) certain options, such as inserting and extracting pages will appear grayed out. You can either re-create the PDF file (and turn off PDF/A creation) or you can turn off the PDF/A view mode (Edit > Preferences > Documents category and set to View documents in PDF/A mode: "Never".
