unchecking "display in browser" has no effect

I have tried numerous things suggested by various prior posts but I still cannot get pdfs downloaded from websites to open in adobe instead of the browser. Specifically, I have:

- unchecked "display in browser" for the adobe pro v8.2.1
- unchecked "display in browser" for adobe reader v9.2.0
- disabled every adobe related plug in on my IE v8.0.6001.18702
- I have needless to say restarted browser & pc numerous times after making above changes

The one thing I have not done is edit my registry as pointed out by some posts. But I do note that the "bBrowserIntegration" flags are set to 0x00000000 already for both the reader & acrobat, which I assume is consistent with unchecking "display in browser". What I do find interesting is that even though my acrobat pro is v8.2.1, there is a 9.0 folder (with very little in it and no "bBrowserIntegration" flag) in the acrobat registry entry in addition to a 8.0 folder.

It's further interesting to note that the "product version" choices in this forum form has no v8.2.1! :)

Can anyone suggest other things I can try? Thanks.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.1.7, Windows

This may be caused by having multiple versions of Acrobat/Reader on your system. See if this tech note helps Acrobat 9 does not display PDF in browser or PDF files are opened in non-browser window after you upgrade to Acrobat 9 or Adobe Reader 9.

Thanks, lkassuba, for the suggestion.

I have deleted the registry entries from the following
..\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\Originals
..\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\8.0\Originals

However, for documents downloaded from the web (ie via clicking on a link in an email or webpage), they still open in browser.

Additionally, in ..\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat there is actually a 9.0 folder which contains only a DiskCabs folder. As far as I can tell, I only have Acrobat 8 pro installed, not 9. Not sure if this has an impact.

Have you tried Repairing your Acrobat installation? This problem is probably caused by having multiple versions of Acrobat and/or Reader on your system -- it's causing these types of conflicts.
